Principal Data Scientist

Our client is based in Derby with a Head Office in London, they are undergoing a period of transformational change in response to the changing landscape in rail and are taking an active lead in the industry in terms of innovation.

The Principal Data Scientist sits within the Digital Services function and is a role with an ambitious and exciting remit. The overall objective of the role is to provide support in maintaining the value of company assets and to ensure customers are fully satisfied with the product they lease.
Working under the direction of the Head of Digital Services this role will support the delivery and development of the Digital Services Portfolio and will lead on data analytics/science tasks to prototype and productionise Digital Services to improve fleet performance and optimise maintenance and rectification activities. This role is pivotal in ensuring that Digital Services offers relevant, robust, high impacting Digital solutions within ambitious timeframes. It will involve technical leadership of analytics activities internally and across the digital supply chain.

Working in close collaboration with key personnel, the role will develop the processes to act on the analytics. It will also develop the evidence of how data and Digital Services can positively impact reliability and availability of the assets, ensuring that a compelling commercial business case can be built.

Our ideal candidate will be an experienced engineer, with an Engineering degree (or equivalent) combined with a strong background in data science. With a proven background in conceptual development and the ability to apply complex analytics to impact operational/engineering environments. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are essential as the role holder will work with a wide range of external suppliers/customers along with the internal teams across the business.

It is essential that candidates have experience of working with cloud services such as Azure, web technologies and local IT infrastructure and software. An understanding of the fleet environment and an awareness of Remote Condition Monitoring products and techniques are desirable but not essential.
In addition, you will have a deep understanding of the benefits that digital services could bring to the rail industry and be passionate about the opportunities this will bring to the sector.

Re-Leasing Manager

Fleet Re-leasing Manager, Derby


Porterbrook Leasing Company specialises in the leasing and asset management of passenger and freight railway rolling stock and associated equipment. Based in Derby with a corporate Head Office in London, the organisation is undertaking a period of transformational change as it responds to the changing landscape in rail and is taking an active lead in the industry in terms of innovation. The ability to respond to the changing needs of the rail industry is critical to the long-term success at Porterbrook and the Fleet Re-leasing Manager is a key role in being able to achieve this.


The role will be accountable for key parts of the re-leasing process working in collaboration with other parts of the business. Key will be the ability to convert the opportunity into a re-lease offer in the shortest possible time, whilst minimising risks to the business. The main responsibilities are:
New Lease Offers:
For each lease offer, liaise with other members of the Commercial team and the wider business to create a summary and costs for -
modifications and capital investments required
future maintenance requirements
Provide technical input to the Procurement team
Re-leasing of Fleets:
Support the creation of compelling bid-strategy documents
address technical questions from customers and technical information
Fleet Strategies:
Support the development of fleet strategies, potential re-lease scenarios and the maintenance and modification implications for each.
Ensure a library of fleet information is kept up to date. This will include:
Collation of internal layouts and capacities;
Details of fleet technical performance;
Details of sub-systems fitted (included supplier details and specification);
Our ideal candidate will have fleet engineering and commercial experience in a role within the rail supply chain, operating company or rolling stock leasing business. It is expected they will have great organisational and communication skills together with financial and budgeting awareness.

We are looking for a Chartered Engineer or someone working towards becoming a Chartered Engineer, with a minimum of 3 years Traction and Rolling Stock experience. Alternatively, a detailed knowledge of the rail industry, with appropriate Traction and Rolling Stock experience, together with HNC or equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering will be considered.

The overall objective of the role is to support Porterbrook in maintaining the value of company assets and to ensure that their customers are fully satisfied with the product they lease. This is a unique opportunity for a candidate with a strong background in data science and ideally engineering to develop innovative analytics solutions to improve fleets reliability and performance.

Digital Services utilises a variety of rolling stock and infrastructure data sources and have state-of-the-art capabilities to research and develop cutting edge products.

Working under the direction of the Principal Data Scientist, this role will support the delivery and development of the Porterbrook Digital Services Portfolio. Taking advantage of the Porterbrook unified data platform and work with the team to prototype and deploy analytics models to predict certain failures and estimate lifecycle of the assets. There will be close collaboration with research organisations and universities to develop innovative products contributing to digitalisation of the railway.  

It is essential for the candidate to have experience in:

  • Machine learning, Data Science, Statistics
  • Deploying and testing models in Python/Apache Spark
  • Cloud computing particularly Microsoft Azure
  • Condition monitoring and developing predictive analysis for engineering applications
  • Develop complex analytics for operational/engineering environments.
  • Developing high impact visualisations and presenting the analytics to technical and non-technical audiences using products such as Power BI
  • A relevant Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, and/or relevant certificates such as Microsoft Azure certification, Azure AI Fundamentals, Azure Data Scientist Associate

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are required as the role holder will work with a wide range of external suppliers/customers along with the internal teams across the Porterbrook business.

The overall objective of the role is to support Porterbrook in maintaining the value of company assets and to ensure that their customers are fully satisfied with the product they lease. This role will support the delivery and development of the Porterbrook Digital Services Portfolio. This would include architecting and delivering high performance data ingestion and transformation platform and to offer solutions to improve the performance of the data platform to create a secure and stable solution for Porterbrook’s products.

It is essential for the candidate to have experience in:

  • Azure data components such as Azure SQL DB, Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks, etc.
  • Databricks Delta Lake
  • Developing data models and have strong Python/Scala and SQL skills for manipulating data.
  • Data profiling, cataloguing, and mapping
  • Developing high impact visualisations and presenting the analytics to technical and non-technical audiences using products such as Power BI
  • Understanding the business objectives and actively contribute to the team and support data scientists
  • Working with big data ideally in engineering sector
  • A relevant degree in Computer Science, Engineering, and/or relevant certificates including Azure Data Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer Associate etc.
